What are 3D ultrasounds?

Three-dimensional (3D) ultrasounds are optional ultrasounds for women during pregnancy. 

Like the traditional ultrasound, 3D ultrasounds use sound wave technology to create images of your baby during pregnancy. However, with 3D ultrasounds, the images are three-dimensional, providing more details of your baby than the traditional ultrasound.

What are 4D ultrasounds?

Four-dimensional ultrasounds are a video version of the 3D ultrasound. Like the 3D ultrasound, the 4D ultrasound creates videos with detailed images of your baby, outlining their facial features, body, fingers, and toes. 

What happens during 3D ultrasounds?

Like the traditional ultrasound, there’s no special preparation needed for the 3D ultrasound. However, the team recommends you wear comfortable clothing that allows your ultrasound technician to access your abdomen easily. 

The ultrasound technician applies a special gel to your abdomen, easing the movement of the ultrasound wand over your belly. Then, they place the ultrasound wand and move it around, allowing you to see clear, detailed images and videos of your baby.  

The team provides printed 3D images and a 4D video for you to share with family and friends. 

What are the benefits of 3D ultrasounds?

A 3D ultrasound is an optional ultrasound and not a needed test during your pregnancy. However, the more detailed ultrasound benefits you and your OB/GYN. 

In addition to giving you more detailed images of your baby, the 3D ultrasound also allows your provider to look for abnormalities like a cleft palate. 

The 3D ultrasounds give you a better image of your baby, helping you gain a better perspective of your baby’s development as described by your provider. Your provider also uses them to assess your baby’s development and determine the sex of your baby.
